IoT and Blockchain - the stack for the DWeb

These days it means more to understand business processes and to transform them into data-driven opportunities – using cloud technology when needed

The Internet we know is a great space for collaboration, social media, sharing, entertainment and gaming. But when it comes to business or transactions, the power belongs to a few big ones who invest and therefore own large parts of the internet. Governments can keep whole countries under surveillance, internet traffic is managed by a few with all the data - and all the risks. I’m sure the next incarnation of the internet will be DWeb (or decentralized web). An IoT and Blockchain based independent network, using as many crypto protocols as available, without anyone in control and it runs on decentralized connectivity layers, physical cables and what might come next.

Different strokes for different folks

The pro for Blockchain on IoT is the nearly unlimited scalability with an affordable price for hardware. 

In a nutshell, Blockchain is a decentralized system in which every transaction gets mathematically approved by the members of the system, therefore every member of that transaction knows about it. The information of the transaction is stored in the distributed servers of the Blockchain. That makes manipulations highly impossible, and the transaction is also highly available at every time. IoT (Internet of Things) is the term for always connected devices interacting with other connected devices. IoT is not new, its used in industries since decades, like Scada, in closed networks or APN.

Data-driven opportunities

IoT does not mean heavy operation costs and long-running training cycles.

IoT devices are getting more and more intelligent and can now create meshed networks by itself, switching from a sensor into an actor and transferring informations only for the neighbors. For example self-driving cars (I admire Elon, he created a universe of future business models with Tesla Network). Right now driving in any society is a mess, to be honest. Humans are impulsive, creating dangerous situations every millisecond and impose the right of whatever. What would happen in a Level 4 or Level 5 environment? Everybody would be the same, equality independent from the car and the status it represents. The cars exchange informations about the status, road, speed and thus build a meshed network dealing with all circumstances in their environment by themselves, building an ultra large neuronal network (complex event processing) which analyses billions of inputs during a drive. That’s IoT. I’m sure in future this will happen over direct meshed information cells automatically, inclusive status updates, using different communication protocols like thread, zigbee, zwave, NB-LTE, 5G, LoRa, SigFox, whatever simultaneously, to exchange, deliver and process data points.

We need and have to use technology to make our world smarter. This enables us to preserve our environment for our upcoming generations. IoT, Blockchains and Smart AI are tools to help us to get there, but the doing needs to be done by our self.
